How I find time to cycle

Good Luck with the cycling Moe. You'll find if you slowly build up what you do it gets easier and easier.
I find that the easiest way for me to get time and motivation to cycle is to combine it with shopping! I sit my 5 year old on the back of my bike and walk it to school and once I've dropped him off I do all the running around I need to do (banks etc) before going to the supermarket and filling up my paniers (with healthy food - honestly!).
I would love to be able to swim more (another exercise that doesn't overload my knees) and we do have a local swimming pool but my youngest son's school insists I'm contactable at all times as he has some learning difficulties.
Just by cycling I've lost 56 lbs in four years (only another 140 lbs to go! yes really 140 lbs )

Thank's Jane. I am slowly building up. It's been handy this past 2 weeks as my car is in the garage for repairs.

I can't wait for the better weather though. Thats great you combine cycling and taking your son to school. I thought of swimming too but never got around to it. Well done on the weight-loss Keep up the good work. Moe

Thank's Kris. Moe

Thank's Jill. I agree cycling could never be boring. Moe

m14moe - That's awesome! Excercise is so important to our state of health and well being. I just saw a news spot about how scientists have discovered it changes our cells - for the better. Have fun! Look up info on Jack Lalanne if you ever doubt the ability of excercise to add to quality of life. He is one amazing man who is still going strong in his 90's ! !

I am beyond 50, I walk every day, riding a bike on the road in front of my house is suicidal because it is St Route with a speed limit of 55. I feel that packing up my bike and driving to the nearest biking trail is just a waste of gasoline.

You have to look at doing some basic exercise daily, walking is really great. I am teaching an elder gentleman down the road from me, isometrics. They work for people who are some what restrained.

Good Luck,

Jerry

You're right Jerry walking is great and well done on helping your friend to exercise. My mum has a friend who ended up semi-paralysed after some surgery and my mum taught her to swim and then acted as a human guide dog (my mum's friend is blind) as they swam lengths together. Her friend is now moving just fine.

My mum knows how exercise can help as 20 years ago my mum was told her arthritis would put her in a wheel chair in 5 years so she took up swimming and got the local council to start a yoga class for the over 50's. She had to give up the yoga 5 years ago but still swims 25 lengths twice a week. She's still walking - no wheel chair yet. (Though she walks bent over - if she stands up straight she can't lift her feet to walk).

Hi Jerry. I agree walking is good and it's walking i have been doing for exercise, but i am combining it with cycling now too.

It's good your helping your friend it's always easier exercising with someone than going it alone.

Hi Jane. Your mum sounds amazing. Well done to start a yoga class, its a shame she can't do that now but i bet she doesn't let many things stand in her way.
