Hello

Hello, I am Nobuko. I've had Type 2 since 2003. I use multiple daily injections of Humalog, Lantus, and Metformin for my oral medicine. I recently found out that Lantus only lasts 16 hours for me, even though the company maintains that it is a 24 hour insulin. When I wrote to the company about the possibility that Lantus doesn't last 24 hours for everyone, I think they weren't very happy to hear that. I received 4 pages of questions that they wanted filled out. My blood sugar numbers are slowly improving since going to 2 daily injections of Lantus. I guess I am the strange person because I don't know anyone else that uses Lantus twice a day.

Welcome to DH.
I remember reading something about that over on DD. Somebody was doing Lantus in the morning and still suffering fasting highs, so started taking it at night instead and the numbers went down.

Love Struck

Hi I am a Newbie here, I was interested about the Lantus and Regular insulin. I currently take 35 units of Lantus at bedtime and am on a sliding scale for the Regular insulin as needed.
I was taking 40 units of Lantus but had to lower it 5 units because my BG's in the mornings were coming in at anywhere from 45 to 52 daily. I rarely take any Regular insulin I have found that walking alot after my meals makes my BG stay in a lower range, sometimes too low.
I have been experimenting with different foods and which ones really make my BG climb and force me to take some Regular insulin, right now my 7 day average is 88 and my 14 day average is 89 and my 30 day average is 90. My only 2 AIC tests one in Sept and the other in Dec of 2007 were 6.2 and 6.0, whew made it through the holidays with the help of Splenda, I love the stuff, but miss my regular Cokes.

Welcome. you mentioned about how you are "the strange person." Don't worry, there are many of us strange people here, and as you will see, we try and help each other out.

Striker, My Dr. also split my dose back in November after almost ten months of me telling him that "Lantus doesn't last 24 hours for me." I think when I tell him something about my diabetes he doesn't believe me and he thinks I am lying to him. I wish I knew how to convince him that I do take his orders seriously and I do my best to follow them.

I've also asked for a referral to an endo which he refused to give me. I don't have good insurance, so I can't afford to pay out of pocket.

Welcome Nobuko! When I was on MDI I also had to split my Lantus to an am and pm shot. I went from 18 total in the am to 9 units in the am and 9 units in the pm. That really helped level things off. I am now on a pump but am close to taking a pump vacation and I am going to see if the Lantus - humolog routine can offer decent control. Welcome and know you have come to a great place for ideas and support!
