i can't imagine NOT going to prenatal classes before having a baby

the classes were excellent, and they included my partner, and told him how HE can help during delivery as well....... and they practiced the techniques (massage, etc) in the classes

and yes, we got a tour of where we were to go when it was time to have the baby, so everything was familiar in advance

my nurse when i had my baby was also the nurse in the prenatal classes :)

How helpful was your man really during childbirth? I can only imagine myself standing around and trying to be useful. It really seems like the human ends up doing most of the work!

oh.........lots!

running to the vending machine to get me a diet soda
running the diet soda up and down my back (the cold feels good)
talking to me in the sitz bath
holding my hand when i just want to kill someone
being there to yell at
taking pictures
and JUST BEING THERE! so i wasn't going thru this all alone

i HIGHLY recommend EVERY husband go to the birthing......... for the sake of their marriage! LOL

and don't worry, we don't really mean those horrible things we say when in that pain (literally the worst pain i have ever felt)

good luck, David ! :)

Yes childbirth classes can be reassuring but don't be surprised if what actually happens is nothing like what you were taught!

They said a first labour takes a long time - yeah right! 3 3/4 hours. Second one was 1 hour 33 minutes. Don't let anyone tell you that quick labours are easier - just imagine 10 hours of pain condensed into 1 1/2hours!

Childbirth classes tell you about on time/normal childbirth and don't mention having your 1 month early baby whisked off to have a drip put in their little arm just in case they get sick.
They don't talk about special care, tube feeding, sun lamps and constant blood tests turning your baby's feet black and blue.
I shouldn't complain - I now have two healthy, adorable boys but I do wish the people who run childbirth classes could come up with a way of telling you what happens in non-standard cases without scaring everybody

My best tip for labour - movement is good pain relief! Pain makes my muscles contract and my imitation of a belly dancer during labour helped stop the cramps in my legs and lower back. Also being upright speeds things up as the weight of the baby's head pressing on the cirvex helps it to open.

Dads - you are there to be sworn at, run errands and only, ONLY do what she asks you to do! If you do anything she hasn't asked for you will be wrong and get yelled at. If you are squeamish there is no need to look at the "business end" and faint but do be there. You got her into this position so why should you avoid the difficult bit?

Paul also thought it was his job to eat the tea and toast supplied when labour was over!

It's worth it in the end - honest!

Jane

David, don't even think about not being there. (I only yelled at nurses, btw.)
It's so worth it. I wish I had a gallery full of the faces of new dads the first time they see their baby. Such magic!

I never took a birth class. I wish I would have the first time. I was clueless and felt really awkward. I don't plan on taking a class because I know what to expect this time... I have still been thinking of any possible way to avoid the birthing process for the last 4 days or so... I'll let all you ladies know if I come up with an answer. I am sure I would win an award for that!

Maybe for Curt's sake I should have looked in to it... But with 9-11 weeks left I think we will just rough it out. youtube has plenty of videos to watch...
