I gave up

Hi everyone, just thought I would let you all know that after nearly 40 years of smoking, I gave it up (June 19, 2007 at 3am prior to being taken to hospital emergency centre). Mind you it took a heart attack to convince me and to motivate me. I was smoking about 30 a day.

I now feel great

Best regards from Johny

Hi Sader,
It wasn't all that difficult, the options were : give up smoking or die very soon. Previously, I had tried to give up on many occasions without succes. I tried all the usual methods including hypnosis, gum, patches and others, all to no avail. What worked for me was the right motivation, and I have not looked back.

Regards Johny

Johny, you went from 30 to 0 in one day? I think that's an amazing testament to the power of the human mind. Was it hard on your body those first few days or could you simply will yourself past it?

While lying on the operating table as the heart specialist is feeding a wire through an artery in my arm to reach several restrictions near my heart, one does not take very long to reach a decision to stop smoking.

In answer to your question David, no, It was not difficult or hard on the body. I read someware that it only takes about 24 hours for the nicotine to be out of the body. After that it is all in the mind and that is the hardest part to overcome.

In my case, I was so angry at what I had done to myself for so many years that it was not hard to overcome the mental aspect of withdrawal.

I get so angry when I see kids smoking and being so cool. If only they new what was install for them. As you can see this has become a bit of a hobbyhorse of mine. I just whish there were some way of getting young people to be more aware of the dangers.

OOPS! I think I have ranted eough here, sorry

best regards to you all
Johny

Johnny, I think that's good for other people to hear. My sister quit smoking on January 1 (for the fourth or so time) and she kicked it one day. I think in a lot of ways tapering is a bad idea. You need to make the mental switch from smoker to non-smoker rather than from smoker to "quitting".

A very BIG 'Well Done' Johny and 'well done' to all those who manage to give up smoking, it's such a brilliant thing to do.

Just to tell a small bit of my story: I decided to give up over 10 years ago whilst having a dreadful coughing bout, one of many that overweight smokers tend to have. I simply thought to myself that I'd been smoking for a little over 40 years, that I wasn't going to get any better by carrying on, so I might as well get on with it and give up. I walked into the kitchen, opened the rubbish bin and threw my tobacco and papers away, that was it, I've never smoked again.
The first 10/15 days I pretended to make my roll ups, from taking the paper out of the packet, putting the tobacco into the paper, rolling the ciggie up, licking the paper, putting the pretend roll up into my mouth and even pretending to light it with a pretend lighter, taking a long draw and inhaling the pretend smoke and then blowing it out of my mouth as I would if it were for real. I used to do this in private (for fear of looking a fool) and with my eyes shut, but, it worked for me. I slowly forgot to pretend over the next period of time until eventually I didn't need it anymore, I can still do it now and still feel the enjoyment that I used to get from smoking but in no way will I ever do it for real, I've felt the benefits.

I hope that my experience and that of Johny and others will encourage more to give up the killer habit and get enjoyment from something else less life threatening.

Lots of luck to you all

BR
