High Triglycerides

I am on Zorcor and it is working well to lower my cholosterol and LDL's and elevate the HDL. Here is my problem. For some reason my triglycerides have gone from 52 to 161 in three months time. During this three months I had 2 TIA's (mini strokes) was put on an apserin a day to start with then after the second TIA was put on Plavix, asperin was discontinued after the first week of being put on the Plavix. Prior to the asperin I was taking Flax Oil supplements and vitamin E trying to keep the lipids lowered however I knew I should not be taking anything additional that would cause any bleeding so they were both stopped.

After finding out my lipid blood test in January and the Tri's being higher than they should be I tried Fish Oil. It gave me gas so bad I had to stop it! My question.....does anyone that is on Flax Oil supplements take them along with the Plavix and if so is there any additional brusing? The bruising I get now is minimal but certainly do not want to add any additional problems to what I already have. Any reponse will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ginny

Hi Ginny. My Mom's boyfriend takes baby Aspirin and Flax seed oil supplements. He has never mentioned any bruising but then again Plavix and Aspirin are not even comparable (My Husband is on Plavix) As for the Triglycerides have you tried Lipitor? Plavix will not lower your triglyceride levels. It is a blood thinner... That is what my husband also takes. His Triglyceride levels and you may want to sit down... were just over 4000. He also had a heart attack a week later so please don't think his body didn't notice. With in 2 months of taking Lipton his triglyceride levels dropped to the low side of normal. It may be something worth looking in to.

Do you have labs done weekly to test how thin/thick your blood is? They should be able to adjust your dosage weekly (According to the labs) to help you out with that bruising...

I'm sorry I couldn't answer you question in full, but I hope it helped a little.

Thanks for replying. Yes, I know Plavix won't lower the Tri's. My Tri's are just above what is supposed to be the cut off but I am diabetic and they should be no higher than 100 so I'm told, however my doctor is not the lest bit concerned but then she wasn't concerned either when my TSH was running too low, which caused the TIA"s. The brusing is coming from me bumping myself not just "bleeding". I started back on the Flax supplement tonight and instead of taking two a day like I used to I am just going to take one a day. I feel as if I take enough meds to kill a horse and I have always tried to go the vitamin way with anything I could. I wish I could take the Fish Oil because I really think that would help lower the Tri's but the gas was horrible!

Thank you for responding. Hope you hubby is doing OK now. Our ex-soninlaw has high Tri's and he has had pancreatitis twice.

Crestor and Tricor got my triglycerides down from 366 to about 120. Getting my glucose down to 95 got my triglycerides the rest of the way down to 54. I also take fish oil capsules.

I take low dose asprin and have had no problems with bruising.

I do the baby aspirin thing, but I use oil that contains Omega 3. Plus a exercise regiment, Tricor and Lipitor. I am genetically predisposed to Hyper Cholesterol both good and bad.

My father had it, and my brother has it. My father had a coronary back when there was no advanced medicines. My brother is stubborn about it.

Farm Living is what has helped me the most. There is a lot to be sad about a simple life.

Good Luck,

Jerry

Hi all,
My tri's are currently at 161, they were 135 (and going down further) after being 263 before my heart attack. They went up after I was in hospital last September for a bleeding stomach ulcer which was caused by taking plavix without some sort of protection for the stomach (very agresive), I also take asprin once a day. Early on I also suffered from bruising, even from the smallest nock. However, this did go away after a period of time.

Regards Johny

Hi Johnny,

Are you still on Plavix AND a regular asperin a day? I was on that combination for only a week and the brusing was horrible! Now I am only on Plavix and seem to be doing Ok with just minor bruising. Thanks for responding.

Hi Ginny,

Yes I am still on the Plavix cos it is also a medication against thrombosis. Since I had two stents inserted last June, I will be required to take the Plavix until June this year (12 months to avoid the stents from being blocked) and then I will only be on the Asprin (ASS 100) only. I don't have any problems with bruising anymore. BTW the Plavix is in the morning and the Asprin in the afternoon, they should not be taken at the same time, especialy without medication to stop them from causing stomach ulcers (not a lot of fun).

Thanks Johny......best of luck to you! Isn't it funny how we would know not to take the Plavix and asperin at the same time, however in the hospital the nurses gave to me at the same time and not with food!?! Just had to add that.
