5 Tips for Finding a Doctor

I'm in the market for finding a doctor. It's been five years since I last had a proper checkup, and I'm a little lost. There are a lot of doctors so how should I choose one?

Luckily, CNN comes to the rescue with some helpful tips this morning. Here's their short list:
  1. Date before you get married
  2. Check them out before on the Internet
  3. Check out the family
  4. Ask your friends to fix you up
  5. Go with your gut
You can read the article for full details on what this means. I think all of these should be common sense except for perhaps #3. The office and nursing staff are probably as important as the doctor in the long run.

Personally, I'm starting with step #4 to be followed by step #5 - I rarely take my own advice! I've asked some of my friends and family to fix me up. I'll keep you posted.

Number 3 makes sense to me. Uh, not meaning to sound sexist, but most guys don't go to the doctor as much as most women. Also, when you have children, you want to know who all is taking care of them.
I highly recommend a general practioner. If you have a good one, they take a more holistic approach, treating the family, the whole body, etc. They know my shady past, my proclivity toward sinus infections, how my sex life is doing, how my depression is, how my sons sobriety is progressing. Every dirty, embarrassing, funny, odd thing about me. Then if a specific problem comes up, you go to a specialist who is only working on one little piece.
I'm very fortunate to have found a great private clinic with two docs, two LNPs, and a great staff. The person who's been there the longest is the receptionist ~ She's known my son since he was 2. And he goes to the same clinic. (He's 30 now.) The two doctors who have moved on have turned their practice over to like-minded people, so, though it wasn't easy, it wasn't as traumatic as moving to a new environment.
I have NEVER been unable to see someone, and 95% of the time, it's the same day.
