Are there drugs in your bottled water?

Here's a scary thought! A lot of water is bottled from natural sources. The water is treated, but exactly how is sketchy. There are no regulations requiring these companies to do anything specific. So if the natural source contains pharmaceuticals, they may end up in your bottle. And no one would ever know.

It's part of the bottled water industry's own "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

I've been thinking about this too since the research was publicized a few days ago about pharmecuticals in tap water, and even in aquafers. (spelling here is questionable.) I wonder what kind of treatment it would take to clear it out. Is it even possible?
Another thing about the articles I read was that they didn't say if there were any that tested clean. Not that I caught, anyway.

Although I wrote this sensationalist headline, I tend to think that these risk are way overblown. It goes hand in hand with the massive germ phobia that so many seem to have. There are traces of gross and unhealthy stuff on everything. As George Carlin said, it's "target practice for my immune system!" At some point we have to do a cost-benefit analysis and ask how many parts per billion of something is it okay to have. If there is one particle of yuck for every 1,000,000,000 particles of goodness, will we be okay? It's certainly worth studying, but not preemptively getting alarmed about.

I mostly agree. I do worry about the cumulitive effects though. When 8 yo girls are reaching puberty regularly, for example, there's something wrong. When you add the stuff on the food with the stuff in the food, and in the water, and in our air... Well, I don't lose sleep over it or anything, but it is something I'm aware of.

That's a valid point, although I think animals treated with hormones may be the most likely suspect. Everything they give them to keep them growing fast and plump can't be healthy for kids!
