Dieting Techniques That Actually Worked

For every thousand diets tried, about 1 works. If you are one of those dedicated few that have taken it off and kept it off, what's your secret? Was it mental? Did you follow a strict routine? Did you just hit the gym? I - as long as thousands of others - am curious about what your winning combination was.

Limiting my carbohydrates has worked for me. It was necessary to help control my diabetes, but I have also lost 34 1/2 pounds in 10 months by doing that. My lipids (Triglycerides and Cholesterol) both became very low also.

I'm with Lloyd on this one - curbing carbs really helps me. Lost 55lbs in total AND have kept it off for 2 years so far. You do have to make permanent changes, so best to find ones you can live with - for me, no drinks with carbs in (ever) was an easy choice, as they don't fill you up any more than carb-free liquids do. And thinking a bit more about why you are eating - for me it wasn't the meals that I ate that were the problem, it was the angry/upset/bored comfort food. And finally (I could go on and on) when you have something you really shouldn't have, try to analyse whether it was worth it and remember that feeling next time you are tempted, quite often stuff does not live up to your imagination/memory & you feel disappointed to have wasted calories/carbs on it - use that disappointment to fuel your willpower for next time.

I've tried to think about each food item that I want to cut back and ask myself, is this really important to me? Is a side of mashed potatoes something I can live without? For that one, yes. For another item, sourdough English muffins, no, I can't live without it. So I can have 1/2 of one, as long as I don't eat any other carbs that meal. What is a "sacrifice" and what isn't? If I feel I'm being deprived I'll binge. I've done it in the past.
So it's all in the mindset, not in the diet book. For me, anyway.

I have to say following a "Diabetic Diet" worked the best for me. It really isn't a diet at all. It's eating the right portions at the right times in the right combination. I asked My Family Doctor, My OBGYN and my mom's employer who is an Infectious Disease Doctor and they all agreed in full 100% that this is the best way to "Diet" It is the inappropriate portions that get so many people in to trouble. They told me if everyone ate "Diabetic Style" then no one would be overweight.

Now I know what the next thing is. What do you consider a diabetic diet? I based my diet off of the diet plan that was set up for Curt and how it was explained to us. He had 5 Carb choices per meal and I set mine at 4. (I'm smaller than him so of course I should eat less) The pounds shed off left and right for both of us. Sure it took a couple to weeks to adjust to it, but it sure was worth it.

After this baby I have every intention of going back to the same diet plan.
