I've tried to think about each food item that I want to cut back and ask myself, is this really important to me? Is a side of mashed potatoes something I can live without? For that one, yes. For another item, sourdough English muffins, no, I can't live without it. So I can have 1/2 of one, as long as I don't eat any other carbs that meal. What is a "sacrifice" and what isn't? If I feel I'm being deprived I'll binge. I've done it in the past.
So it's all in the mindset, not in the diet book. For me, anyway.
